February 28, 2006 FRCC UNDERTAKES A REVIEW OF Ottawa – The Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans has formally asked the Fisheries Resource Conservation Council ( FRCC ) to review and evaluate the Atlantic Lobster Conservation Framework developed by the FRCC in 1995. The review will identify conservation measures that were successful and those that were less successful and recommend changes required to adapt the Framework to today’s fishery. Lobster has consistently been the most lucrative fishery in Atlantic Canada and Quebec . It is the backbone of numerous fishing communities on the East Coast with total annual landings averaging close to half a billion dollars over the last decade. The review will provide an opportunity for fishermen, industry and other stakeholders to further reflect on the long-term sustainability of the fishery. As part of its mandate, the Council is announcing that it is undertaking extensive consultations with industry stakeholders in Atlantic Canada and Québec. The FRCC invites all stakeholders and interest groups to take part in the discussions and submit written presentations to the FRCC Secretariat. A consultation schedule is available on the FRCC website (www.frcc-ccrh.ca) and will be announced shortly in local papers. In looking at the long-term sustainability of the lobster fishery, the Council will be in search of best practices as well as identifying those factors that are detrimental to the resource. The FRCC will be seeking suggestions regarding the management and science of Atlantic lobster. The Council will be addressing issues such as the scientific knowledge base, harvesting efforts and fishing practices, environmental and ecosystem factors. -30- For additional info rmation or to submit your written presentation, please contact : Fisheries Resource Conservation Council Secretariat |
