FRCC UNDERTAKES A REVIEW OF ATLANTIC LOBSTER

(Ottawa) -- The Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (FRCC) announced that commencing September 11, 2006, it will undertake phase two of its consultative process; reviewing the 1995 report on the Atlantic Lobster Conservation Framework.

“Consultations this spring went very well,” indicated Jean Guy d’Entremont, Chairman of the FRCC. “The Council had good discussions with fishermen and other stakeholders.” Mr. d’Entremont also noted that presentations made to the FRCC during these consultations and the briefs received required significant planning and effort by the many individuals and associations.

Phasing of consultations was necessary due to the difference in seasons and short timeframe the Council had for spring consultations. The meetings starting in September will ensure that all fishermen have an opportunity to meet and discuss views on how to maintain a sustainable commercial lobster fishery.

“The fall consultations will focus on the 1995 Framework - looking at what worked and what did not,” indicated Gabe Gregory, Council Vice-Chair. Views on all aspects of the fisheries are sought; including management, science, harvesting methods, etc. According to Mr. Gregory, the 1995 framework was a useful guide for some fishermen while others noted that the report was difficult to implement.

Once consultations are complete the Council will review findings and invite a selected group of stakeholders for a two-day workshop, to further discuss and assess ideas brought forward during consultations.

The FRCC intends to make public its report by mid-year 2007. In the interim, it encourages local associations and DFO to adopt any measures they see appropriate to conserve the Atlantic lobster resource. “Fishermen and the Department do not need to wait for the report to be tabled before adopting measures that they know are necessary to conserve the resource in their Lobster Fishing Area,” added Mr. d’Entremont.

The consultation schedule and other background information are available on the FRCC website at www.frcc-ccrh.ca or by contacting the FRCC Secretariat.
