April 20, 2004 FRCC’S CONSERVATION REQUIREMENTS FOR GROUNDFISH STOCKS IN On March 2, 2004 the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, the Honourable Geoff Regan, asked the Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (FRCC) to provide advice on the Gulf of St. Lawrence groundfish stocks including the Gulf (4TVn and 3Pn4RS) cod stocks currently under moratorium. The FRCC held consultations in Port Hawkesbury, Moncton, Gaspé, Magdalen Islands, Cow Head, Port aux Basques and Blanc Sablon during the last week of March and the first week of April 2004. Following consultations, the Council met to discuss and prepare recommendations. Due to a short delay in final arrangements, the Council will not have its report ready for release on April 22, 2004 as initially requested by the Minister. The Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (FRCC) will release its advice, to the public and the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, regarding the 2004/2005 fishing season for groundfish stocks in the Gulf of St. Lawrence on April 29, 2004 in St. John’s, NL. The Chairman of the FRCC, Mr. Jean Guy d’Entremont, will hold a press conference at 10:30 a.m. on April 29 at the Fairmont Hotel Newfoundland, Garrison Room, in St. John’s, NL. For those wishing to participate, but unable to attend, a toll free “event” line has been arranged. The number to call to participate in the press conference is 1-888-265-0464 at 10:30 a.m. Newfoundland time. The 2004/2005 Gulf of St Lawrence groundfish report and recommendations will be available on the FRCC website at www.frcc-ccrh.ca on the date noted above. -30- For information: Arthur Willett |
