LETTER TO STAKEHOLDERS

December 19, 2003

Letter to Stakeholders:

The Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (FRCC) will hold public consultations this winter to gather information on Scotian Shelf and Bay of Fundy groundfish stocks as well as redfish stocks. This information will assist the Council in making recommendations to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans for conservation requirements for 2004/2005.

The meetings will be held in the following locations:

  • January 6 – Yarmouth at the Rodd Grand Hotel (7:00 pm)
  • January 7 – Dartmouth at the Park Place Ramada Plaza (1:30 pm)
  • January 8 – Sydney at the Delta Sydney (9:00 am)

Scientists from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans will provide new information on a number of groundfish stocks, including:

COD 4X5Y HADDOCK 4X5Y SILVER HAKE 4VWX
ATLANTIC HALIBUT 3NOPS4VWX5ZC

During these meetings, the FRCC will seek the views of stakeholders regarding all of the stocks in preparation for the provision of advice to the Minister in February 2004.

The FRCC is seeking comments on all matters pertaining to the conservation of groundfish stocks in these areas. The following questions are provided as examples of information the Council is seeking:

  • Do you perceive a problem with groundfish conservation in 4VWX5Y or in particular zones within this area?
  • What additional measure, if any, would you suggest be considered to ensure adequate conservation of the resource?
  • Have you noted a trend in catch rates or size and condition of fish that would indicate a change or conservation concern?
  • The Council would also like to get your comments on the cod-haddock mixed fishery problem and your views on measures to minimize by-catch.

Stakeholders are encouraged to make public presentations at the meetings or provide a written brief to the FRCC at P.O. Box 2001, Station D, Ottawa, ON K1P 5W3, fax (613) 998-1146, internet www.frcc-ccrh.ca.

We look forward to hearing your views and hope you will participate fully.

ours truly,

Jean Guy d’Entremont ,
Chairman
